Circle K Stores recognize the critical importance partnerships hold in the prevention of crime and the accumulative positive impact such collaborative actions can have on protecting the vital interests of a community. As an industry leader, we have developed a philosophy of
Crime Prevention Through Community Engagement which exemplifies our commitment to community safety across the Province of Ontario.
Harvard Business Review
A few years ago, an Associate Professor from Harvard University approached our Loss Prevention Department and was interested in conducting a Harvard Business Study on the unique approach we had taken at Circle K (formally Mac's Convenience Stores) in combating crime associated with armed robberies and youth related crime issues. The Clear Zone
The Clear Zone robbery prevention program works by identifying a prominent window that strategically overlooks the cash handling area. It then highlights and defines that window through the application of the Clear Zone decal to draw in witness potential and acts as a reminder to store owners to keep the window free of signage and the area free of clutter.
The Circle K StreetART Mural initiative works to create strategic partnerships in an effort to help prevent crime and strengthen community relationships; while working diligently towards a community-based shared responsibility. Engaging the community, especially the youth will only empower them to develop a stronger ability to make a positive difference.
The Positive Ticketing youth engagement initiative, dubbed Operation Freeze and Operation Heat are simply coupons for free beverages (Frosters in the summer and a selection of hot beverages in the winter months). Since the inception of this initiative in 2007, more than 1.7 Million Operation Freeze and Operation Heat coupons have been strategically issued by police officers to recognize and motivate Ontario’s youth for positive behavior.
Lock It or Lose It
Circle K are a proud sponsor of this innovative, organized and community minded Auto Theft Crime Prevention Program created by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to encourage drivers to Lock it or Lose it.
SafeGuard Ontario - Small Business Edition
Armed robbery, shoplifting, break & enters, debit/credit card fraud and even gasoline thefts - small businesses can fail because of losses from these types of crime.
Circle K/Mac's Convenience Stores worked closely with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to develop this crime prevention video to assist small business across the Province of Ontario to remain safe.

In 2010, Circle K created a partnership with Ontario Provincial Police AMBER Alerts program. This partnership was created with the Ontario AMBER Alert program in an effort to engage the public as quickly as possible in the event of child abduction. With hundreds of stores in communities large and small across the province, Mac’s store presence can help extend the reach of such critical information to the public in a timely fashion.
Community safety is a shared responsibility, it’s important to educate and empower citizens to safely make a difference by calling Crime Stoppers anonymously. This is why the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers launched a province-wide public awareness campaign to highlight the threats to our communities posed by the sale of illegal cigarettes and to remind Ontarians that contraband tobacco is illegal for a reason: the sale of these products help fund organized crime, serving to make our communities less safe. Soo Greyhounds-Sault Ste Marie Police Cards
Circle K partnered with the Sault Ste Marie Greyhounds Hockey Club on a unique opportunity to connect with the Sault Ste Marie community. The cards have photos of Greyhounds players and Police Officers together - the cards will be handed out to local youth in SSM by on-duty police officers.
Circle K partnered with the Peel Regional Police in July 2018 to implement the SafePlace Program into all our stores within the Region of Peel. The initiative encourages LGBTQ+ victims of bias-motivated crimes and any community member in need of police assistance to report incidents at designated businesses that display the Safe Place decal. For the Safe Place Initiative to work properly, it must be believed in and trusted by the victims. Their belief and trust will come from their observations and experiences that sincere efforts are being made by all involved in the project and that safety is paramount.
Circle K partnered with the Sault Ste. Marie Police in July 2020 to implement the Safe Place Program into all our stores within the city. The initiative encourages all victims of crime and any community members in need of police assistance to report incidents at designated businesses displaying the Safe Place decal. A Safe Place decal will be featured in the front window of the nine local Circle K stores.
For the Safe Place Initiative to be a success, the community must believe and trust that it will work. Circle K provides training to all employees so they are able to help people in a time of need and notify police.
